Colours and fragrances

Take a look at how we see the SEVEN colours of the rainbow

Dear Guests,

On the previous photo, taken from one of your terraces, you will have discovered this delicate rainbow, which reflects most of the colours of the Drôme Provençale, all around the house.

In the evening, while you sip a glass of white or rosé wine, the sun will consume the valley of Valréas (6 miles) and the hills of the Ardèche (30 miles) on the other side of the river Rhône.

The sunsets seem to reflect in June the bright red colours of the cherries in the garden and in August

the purplish red of the grapes that produce the wines of the Drôme Provencale - surrounding the house - that very exclusive taste of raspberries, cherry and wood. The apricots and peaches which you will be invited to taste direct from the tree are orange and yellow.

Green is in the vineyards, olive groves and pinewoods, (or as you walk in the groves) as you will walk, cycle or motorcycle in the vicinity (rental in Nyons, 7kms away): Grignan (itineraries of old-fashioned roses and lavender), Nyons (the olive country).

Under the Romanesque Bridge in Nyons, the river Eygues is said to be indigo blue, while the river Drôme is turquoise (blue) and in summer, seems like a purpose-built aquatic playground.

The Rhône in Avignon (35 miles), is sapphire blue.

 - "How would you describe the colour of our pool?"

As for the black and white (which do not appear in a rainbow!), you will find these as you arrive from Vaison-la-Romaine , Nyons or Valréas.

We will let you discover this happy accident of nature which has cut the shape of two immense seagull wings in the foothills of the Massif de la Lance.

From your terrace, 20 miles away, you can see the white summit of Mount Ventoux (1.912 metres), chalky in summer, snow-white in winter.

- "What about the black?" you might ask.

- "Well: there is no pollution here, and the sky at night is black and studded with golden stars. Gold is in the sky (seeming to be at hand’s reach) and

"... BLACK !"

the black diamonds (or truffles - melanosporum) of Richerenches are at your feet."

This house is an ideal family or party place. It provides tranquillity and « bien-être » for the adults as well as fun for the children. There is so much to see and do that you will probably want to reserve for the following year!:

Nyons (4 miles) Sites: Olive Oil Press, Photo Lavender Distillery, Lavender Distillery Bleu Provence (and even a traditional brewery for the very British!). Le Jardin des Arômes (free entry) on the Promenade de la Digue, offers 180 aromatic and medicinal plant varieties.

The two markets nearest to the house are Nyons and Valréas:

Valréas (4 miles): Festival des Nuits de l’Enclave in July and August (www.les nuitsdel’

- Corso de la Lavande (floats decorated with flowers, brass bands, folk groups).

Grignan (10 miles): Literary Festival, originating from letters written by the Marquise de Sévigné to her daughter, who married the Conte de Grignan. They lived in the Renaissance Castle dominating the village.

Richerenches (10 miles): Demonstrations of truffle harvesting with specially trained dogs (November to March).

Montelimar (20 miles): manufacture of nougat, a close relation of Turkish delight. The Château des Adhémar (11th century)situated on a wooded hill gives its name to the town (Montelium Adhemari). Art exhibitions (painting, sculpture, tapestries) and entertainments are held here regularly.

Mont Ventoux (1912 metres)(20 miles): The giant of Provence. Shady paths to be walked in the summer and even at night by the light of the moon (spectacular sunrises).

Forêt de Saou (900 to 1600 metres)(20 miles): 250 chamois on the ridges (take a good pair of binoculars), vultures at Rémuzat (45 minutes), and the Crocodile Farm (400 crocodiles viewed from platforms) at Pierrelatte (45 minutes).

And if you like water sports:

Vallon Pont d’Arc (30 miles): Gorges de l’Ardèche: canoeing, including kid raids (1 child, 1 adult), from 6 to 30 kms of panoramic routes.

Cassis (85 miles) And why not? A glance of the Mediterranean Sea: the rocky inlets visited on a rubber dinghy (

And many, many other activities and places to visit.

- As well as the Sauna at home (available on special arrangement) there is a thermal resort at Montbrun-les-Bains (17miles).

- Fishing: The Drôme boasts 700 miles of rivers of various categories (salmonids and cyprinids) and 7000 acres of lakes and reservoirs.

- Climbing, caving parapente courses and 4 flying centres (Pierrelatte - 20m), touring on horseback, mountain-biking (VTT).

- Cross country and alpine skiing - Mont Ventoux (60 minutes) - Ecole de Ski Français, the Vercors and Superdevoluy, Southern Alpes (90 minutes).

- Golf:

Clansayes (15 miles), near St Paul Trois Châteaux : a technical and undulating course (9 holes - par 35 - 2600m) and 10 practice lanes.

Mont Boucher (La Valdaine) near Montelimar (20miles): 18 holes - par 71 (on a 200 acre domain, no major difficulties, few variations in level, water hazards. Needs dexterity and precision).

Venterol - Novezan: an area which has many medieval and historic places to visit. The Tour Château Ratier (11th century) overlooks the house (200 yards) and fascinates everyone who comes here.

Restaurants: last but not least! Only a short drive away you have a great choice of restaurants, adapted to all budgets and the tastes of adults and children.

Each season offers attractions and activities. We know them well and will be more than happy to suggest what corresponds to your interests and those of your party.

You will want to come again next year! Perhaps at a different season…

"Bienvenue à "La Commanderie" at any season".
